AE and KU questions

The mark scheme defines the difference between AE and KU questions like this:

Knowledge & Understanding:

  • Accurate, relevant and detailed knowledge of content is demonstrated
  • The information is presented in a structured manner

Critical Analysis and Evaluation

  • Analysis of texts, arguments and position is shown and/or
  • Evaluation is balanced, based on aspects already discussed and is relevant to the question being asked.

When you plan your answers, you need to make a quick note of everything that comes into your mind. Separate this information into knowledge of the subject and you opinions on the subject. You should use other writers to back up your opinion - you usually can't get full AE marks by just rambling about your opinion, but the examiner does want to hear what you think.

Time Keeping!

The exam is 2 hours 40 minutes long (160 minutes). There are 120 marks available in total - so that's a minute per mark, with 40 minutes for planning and proofreading. Use this as a guide for planning your answers and keeping an eye on the time and you should be fine. The hall where you sit your exam will have a clock, but you might find it helpful to have a watch with you so you can plan more carefully - there is no shame in being a little bit OCD!
